Is Your Pet Suffering from Mold Exposure? Watch for These Signs.

Mold presence in the home or workspace can lead to multiple negative health effects. Often people are unaware of the presence of mold in their home until they begin suffering the symptoms of being exposed to it. Sometimes however, it’s not the tenant’s symptoms that alert them of the possible presence of mold- it’s their pet’s.

Some humans have sensitivities to airborne particulates and pets are no different. Mold can affect the respiratory system of your pets in the same way that it can affect yours, but they are in the unfortunate situation of being unable to express that or consult with a doctor (vet) about their symptoms. Here are 3 key things to watch out for that may indicate your pet is suffering from mold exposure.

  1. Respiratory problems: Airborne mold spores can irritate your pet’s lungs and cause coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. If you notice your pet experiencing difficulty in their breathing or notice them sounding different, it may be worth monitoring and taking them to a vet if needed.

  2. Allergic reactions: Your pet may develop an allergic reaction to mold, which can cause symptoms like itching, redness, and swelling of their skin. Pay attention to pets scratching themselves more often, hair loss, and other signs of potential discomfort.

  3. Behavioral changes: If your pet is feeling sick, they may exhibit behavioral changes like lethargy, lack of appetite, and decreased activity. If you notice your pet acting differently and they don’t return to normal within a couple of days, they may be dealing with an infection or a mold related illness.

  4. Increased thirst and urination: Some molds can produce mycotoxins, which can damage the kidneys and lead to increased thirst and urination in pets. If you notice your pet needing to go outside more often than usual, having accidents inside, or being unusually thirsty, it may be a sign of a kidney issue.

If you notice your pet behaving differently, acting in discomfort, or you suspect that they have been exposed to mold, it’s important to take them to a veterinarian as soon as possible for an evaluation and treatment.
